fuck. lance hahn of j-church died. I'm going to dust off my copy of "nostalgic for nothing" and drink some. dammit.
from punknews
link.Founding member of J Church and all around well-loved punk icon Lance Hahn has passed away. Hahn had been comatose since Friday, October 12th following a collapse during dialysis. According to a post attributed to Hahn's girlfriend:
Lance Hahn was the lead singer, guitarist, and founding member of J Church. He also wrote extensive "punk rock history" articles for Maximumrocknroll. In addition of all of this, he found time to run Honey Bear Records. Hahn was working on a compliation book of writings on anarcho-punk bands, called "Let the Tribe Increase," to be released on AK Press.as far as the doctors can tell, this collapse was due to a sudden, drastic drop in blood pressure, which in turn was probably caused by a recurrence of the infection he had had in september combined with the stress of dialysis. he received immediate cpr from medical professionals at the dialysis center, but as it took fifteen or twenty minutes to resuscitate him, he suffered neurological damage from lack of oxygen to the brain, leaving him in a coma from which he never returned.
RIP.
I've been disgruntled all week at the hype surrounding the recent apple announcement, and at all the iphone early adopters being pissy on message boards and tech blogs.
I found this from digg, and it made me smile. this guy is right. I'm going to go back to listening to my last gen ipod, go back to playing with my antiquated compaq notebook running ubuntu linux (which I think I might like better than osX now anyways), and laugh at not being out an extra couple hundred bucks.
A bit of advice for all those who rushed out to be the first on their block with a new iPhone and are now bellyaching because Apple reduced the price:
Get a life.
What rock have you folks been living under? Have you bought an airline ticket recently? Or have you ever haggled with a rug salesman? Or bought a case of wine on sale at the local liquor store that sold for 20 percent more the week before?
As the generation that has grown up on eBay, Priceline and day-trading on Nasdaq, you should have developed at least a rudimentary understanding of markets -- willing buyers and willing sellers and all that.
And fairness -- what's that have to do with anything? If Apple suddenly discovered that it was losing money on the new iPhones and suddenly raised the price, would you have volunteered to send a check?
I've got some news for you: Steve Jobs is not your friend. The reason he's a billionaire and you're not is that he's brilliant at selling you gadgets that make you feel so cool you're willing to pay way more than it costs to make them. His only mistake last week was letting you in on his little secret.

my cat, so far, is on the steady pace to a state of normalcy. I feel like I can sort of get back to worrying about other things. so back to my blog.
last night my band played the capitol hill block party, and it was our "FUCK YOU, WE'RE BACK" set. we hadn't played that good or had a crowd reaction that good in such a long time. it makes me hopeful for the future. we'll be finishing our demos in a couple weeks. a lot rests on that. we'll see.
it felt good to be back.
some of you might remember might first post being about the descendents/ALL.. and no.. I'm not on such a huge Descendents/ALL kick anymore.. (lately its been misfits/samhain/danzig...don't ask).. but this song has been on repeat lately, so I thought I'd share it. it's not the best song on "Allroy's Revenge", but its damn good. you will enjoy it I believe.
oh yeah, scott reynolds was in a band with t. dallas reed (our producer and lead shredder in mos generator) a few years later. other than that, scott hasn't really done anything quality since leaving ALL. on my opinion, anyways.
some of you may have noticed a lack of blogging on my end. there is also a lack of everything else in my life, as I can't muster up the energy to focus on anything. I have to record soon, I have shows to play. there are songs I want to finish writing, I have computer projects I want to work on. nothing seems to matter right now, because of three little letters...

What is Feline Chronic Renal Failure?Extremely common in older cats, CRF is a serious condition evidenced by gradual, irreversible deterioration of kidney function over a period of months or years. The kidney consists of tiny funnel-shaped tubes called nephrons, which filter and reabsorb the fluids that balance the body. When an individual nephron is damaged by any cause, (aging, poison, infection, etc.) it stops functioning.
Fortunately the kidney can still function with as few as twenty-five percent of its original nephrons, as other nephrons can grow larger to "fill in the blanks."Kidney failure occurs when the remaining functioning nephrons drop below 25%. Kidney failure creates several body disfunctions: Toxins, such as urea and creatinine which normally are secreted as waste, build up in the blood.
Other components in blood, such as phosporus or sodium may rise or fall abnormally. Urine may contain protein which is not handled well by failing kidneys. How is CRF Diagnosed?
CRF is diagnosed by a blood panel, which measures levels of critical blood components such as blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and a red blood cell count. Analysis of urine will test for protein, bacteria, and blood, as well as how well the kidneys are concentrating urine.
What are the Symptoms of CRF?All but one (difficulty urinating) of the symptoms listed below can also be indicative of other disease, e.g., hyperthyroidism. In fact, hyperthyroidism may mask CRF, which points out the need for an accurate diagnosis.
- Weight loss
- Excessive thirst and urination
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Obvious difficulty in urinating
- Dull or ill-kept coat
How is CRF Treated?
- Subcutaneous Fluids (Sub-Q): Severely affected cats may have to be hospitalized for rehydration, however most people can learn to admister Sub-Q at home. Additional fluids may be added to food.
- Diet: Your veterinarian may prescribe a low protein, low phosphorus diet, based on your cat's overall health.
- Medication: Depending on related problems, such as hypertension or anemia, your veterinary may prescribe a number of different medications. Epogen shots may be given, or oral medication for cleaning the blood of toxins released by the kidneys.
- Appetite stimulants: If anorexia is a problem, your veterinarian may prescribe these, although cats often start eating again once they are sufficiently hydrated. Since CRF cats often have poor appetites, it is important to get your cat to eat something, if they shun their prescription foods. Human baby food meat (NO onions), tuna juice, juice from packets of premium cat foods or other similar enticements can be added to spice the taste of the prescribed food and to help stimulate the patient's appetite. You may even use "forced feeding" with high quality canned food mixed with water or other fluids, administered with a small syringe, if weight loss is severe.
- Hemodialysis: Although the equipment is expensive and unlikely to be found in your local veterinary clinic, if you are fortunate to live near a large teaching college with the facilities, hemodialysis is a possible last resort treatment.
- Kidney transplant: This is probably not an option for an elderly cat, and is quite expensive.
Managing a CRF cat will produce a roller-coaster of emotions, as you find yourself overjoyed or in despair over the latest BUN and Creatin numbers. Try to remember the old medical adage to "treat the cat, not the numbers. One of the best things you can do for your CRF cat is to try to relax, keep stress for both of you at a minimum, and enjoy your close relationship as you travel this road together.
roller coaster of emotions, they aren't kidding.
I was at the pita pit having dinner, and the hippies behind the counter were rocking some lame led zeppelin live record with 9-20 minute long jams.
it was the worst dining experience of my life.
I can't stand that band. I can't stand 90% of any "blues-based" rock or classic rock.
fuck the blues. fuck art. lets rock.
thank you screeching weasel.
this was one of my favorite movies as a kid. released in 1987.. it was like the goonies meets the the universal monsters. it comes out on dvd july 24th.
kane hodder update
new songs, new demos, new RECORD, seaweed tribute, and MORE!
it's been 7 months since the last blog post and quiet a bit has been
happening behind the scenes. we're happy to announce that we're almost
done writing the next record. since we took a break from touring in
support of "the pleasure to remain so heartless" in the winter of 2006,
we've seen two members come and go, we've toured japan, parted ways
with our record label, started a podcast, have had way too many
sleepless nights, and have managed to write 14 BRAND NEW SONGS, a few
disney covers (as you may have seen on youtube), and a botch cover (who
only a handful have been lucky enough to see live).
in a few weeks
we'll be entering the studio again with t. dallas reed (engineer and
producer on "a frank exploration...", "pleasure to remain.." as well as
"fantastic wounds" by schoolyard heroes) to demo the last handful of
new songs. from that point we'll be finding a new home for ourselves as
well as our next record, and hopefully getting some tours in before we
record the next record.
in the meantime, we're happy to announce that we'll be appearing on Hours and Hours: A Tribute to Seaweed, on Engineer Records. Seaweed has been a favorite band of ours for a very long time, and we're honored to be paying tribute with so many other great bands. the bands on the cd are:

this entry was posted on the hodder myspace (blog and bulleting), livejournal, and hodderrock.com. thought I may as well post it here too.
while I was doing my last post, I noticed that the guy in the ad looked like my friend chris cab. maybe its an old picture of him? maybe he's got a long lost twin brother? I should investigate.
his name is going to blow up my tag cloud. people are going to think we're lovers or something.
the very first real band I was in was with my current (and at one time former) roommate bryant. we were called meriwether, and we weren't very good. I wasn't a good bass player (I'm still not, which is why I play guitar now), our drummer (alex) wasn't a drummer, but a guitar player, our gear was HORRIBLE (peavy amps, cheap guitars, percussion plus drums), and no matter how often we practiced... it didn't set right. the band was influenced a lot by the current mainstream alternative music of the time. the smashing pumpkins were always played at our house, although I had succeeded in introducing them to sunny day real estate and the promise ring. bryant was always the forward thinking of the other guys, he wasn't stuck in the same kind musical loop that the other guys were, his tastes were always really progressive.. more progressive than mine. I didn't see it at the time because our tastes were still somewhat different, and I was stuck in my own loop of influence.
when I got the chance to be in a different band, I took it. they were a punk rock band, and I wanted to be in a punk rock band for years. at the time it seemed like the smart thing artistically (it was), but I could've handled it better. anyways...
bryant's band continued to exist, with different members coming and going, and with various (I think) name changes. the last incarnation of the band was called "ardus", and they entered into the studio for one last hurrah. after the first day of recording, they realized that their drummer couldn't cut it (alex had moved from drums to bass). tony reed (who was recording them) offered to drum on the recording, and they continued from there. unfortunately alex had decided to quit and end the band before the process was finished, and ardus was quietly laid to rest. a few months after they broke up, bryant went back into the studio to finish mixing the record.
I've had a copy of it since it was finished, and thought it was the best thing they'd ever done, and I felt proud for them, because it was REALLY good. even though I hadn't been a part of the band for so long, I still wanted them to succeed.. and by recording such a great record (or demo, or whatever), they had. a few weeks ago I re-discovered a gem from those sessions, and I've been wanting to share it for quite a while.
listen to this song twice even, its really good. the bass line during the verse, interplaying with the jangly guitars and the keyboards is terrific. my favorite parts of the song are the pre-choruses. the lead line that flows underneath the vocals is great, even in its simplicity.. and then it really hits when it gets to the chorus, with the walls of guitars. after the second guitar, it goes into the outro lead, which ends with a great riff, and that leads into the very end of the song.. where tony reed shows off how amazing he is on the drums.
to hear bryant's other stuff, visit him here. add him as a friend, I want to see if me mentions anything about it!

My advice to the Hard up fans of the cartoon is if they want that old Transformers action, buy the... read more
